"Geek Girl" gamers are more likely to study science and technology degrees

In the article "Geek Girl gamers are more likely to study science and technology degrees" talks about how girls labeled as "Gamer Girls" are more likely to study Science and Technology. The study funded by the British Academy states that girls who play games are up to three times more likely to choose physical science, technology, engineering or math careers than the "non-gamer" girls based on the research made by the University of Surrey. This research was lead by Dr. Anesa Hosein which stated "there are still too few female PSTEM role models for young women. However, our research shows that those who study PTSEM subjects at degree level are more likely to be gamers, so we need to encourage the girl gamers of today to become the engineering and physics students and pioneers of tomorrow". What Dr. Anesa Hosein is saying is that not a lot of girls are encouraged to study technology related career and which means that there are less role models for young women. She also talks about how parents and people in their surroundings should introduce them to these careers or attending to gaming experts talks.

In my opinion, the fact that girls are being "hunted" in some way for these careers to have more female role models sounds kind of sexist. In the article you can find a line that says that males can be considered gamers but they aren't necessarily studying technology related careers. Also, when it comes to taking these girls to "Gaming experts talks" feels like it's kind of going to the extreme. At the end of the story, these girls will stop gaming because all the pressure they would be getting. They should be free to do whatever they want even if they're gamers or not. This article makes me feel like Gamer Girls are classified as type of people for certain careers which shouldn't be like that.
